Think More of Others and Less of Ourselves
A message from the FILAMemphis president

In this world of uncertainty, we can only hope to live our lives as meaningful as we can. Seize the moment to help others while we are still able to, physically and financially, for the window of opportunity is indeed small and may close anytime.

As I commence my second term as your president, I am thankful to you for giving me your vote of trust that I will be able to ably serve you, our community, and our motherland for another 2 years. I will continue to serve you the best way I can — with honesty, sincerity, passion, and love.

Our biggest project is the building of our multipurpose cultural center, indeed an ambitious but meaningful enterprise that will involve the collective efforts of the entire community. I invite all of you to make a pledge that will represent your commitment to the solidification of our identity as truly Filipino. The medical/surgical missions to the Philippines continues as we head to San Carlos City in Negros Occidental come June 2007. The cultural celebrations, such as the Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo, will continue to enrich our tradition as Filipino-Americans in Memphis. The educational grants will continue to inculcate the importance of higher education to our children. Our newest project is the Medical Outreach Clinic that opened doors in February 2007 to the medically underserved, the indigents and the uninsured in Memphis.

We are not just a social club, we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. As you can discern from our projects, we will continue to serve others, without expecting anything in return. Let us discard the “what’s in it for me” attitude once and for all, and adapt the “what’s in me for you” philosophy. Think more of others and less of ourselves. If this is the only thing you learn from being a member of our organization, then my presidency will not have been in vain.

I thank my outgoing officers for doing an excellent job and leading by example, and I welcome and congratulate the incoming officers who have accepted the challenge of a new mandate.
I thank the Board of Directors for their support, for sharing their wisdom in guiding our organization. Last but not the least, I thank my family for their unwavering support and understanding.

May the Lord keep us in His graces. Mabuhay ang FILAMemphis!!!!
